Man & Computer - IBM 1965

Thanks to IBM for making the seemingly stupid, useless, invention that many would never imagine to be useful to them personally… seem useful to everyone with this video.

This video brings a lot of things to mind. Just under a decade after it was made I started growing up. For me, computers were already an integral part of my life… all our lives. They’ve only become more so as our society has become dependent on the benefits they provide.

My favorite part of this video is the end. Though it does explain in very easy to understand ways what a computer is and what it does (in 1965 terms), I greatly enjoy the model of the city. Its a huge model city that was created based on what 500k people wanted in their city of the future. I think to myself and smile when, with today’s computers, we could build that same city online and populate it with people from all over the world. Hundreds of people could gather in the city and test theories and ideas of all kinds… and the entire city would exist .. inside a computer’s memory.

Just thinking of those concepts and seeing this video at the same time renews my faith that I am on the right road. I believe that we really are progressing at a great rate technologically, just not all that progress is obvious to the naked eye like flying cars to work.
